How does the Keywords Planner work?

The Keyword Planner first creates a list of suitable keywords for your topic, for example, using the term “sneakers”, which you can easily and, above all, free of charge in the search line under “Enter term or domain”. Subsequently, the Keyword Tool generates a list of terms related to the topic you are looking for, in the example case this could be “black sneakers”, “sneaker damen”, “fußballschuhe” and many more terms – of course also using the relevant brand names.


The Keyword Tool provides additional information on the displayed terms, which is of great importance for building your content and ad strategy: For example, the “Search Volume” column tells you how often your listed keyword has been searched for on the Internet. The column “Competitors” informs you about the competitive situation in the market – how much competition do you have to expect for this keyword? Finally, the column “CPC” informs you about the so-called “Cost Per Click” – a cent or euro amount, which we will discuss later in the chapter “Using Keyword Planner for Planning a Paid Search Campaign”.
