The free Website Security Check checks whether your URL has been blacklisted by Google Safe Browsing. If you see the green tick in the result of the analysis, everything is fine. Google has no indication of a serious threat that could degrade the ranking and harm your users.

In case your website ended up on the Google Safe Browsing blacklist, you can request Google to re-scan it after cleaning up all malicious or infected content. After about 24 hours, the now safe site is removed from the blacklist and reappears undisturbed in the search results.

The term SQL injection refers to an attack via the SQL database. A hacker can use SQL injection to steal or modify data or generally cause great damage. SQL databases are always vulnerable when there is poor, incorrect masking. The Website Security Check scans the source code for such flaws and shows you problem areas.

Source code disclosure is about the disclosure of sensitive data in the source code. If the server stores information such as passwords, e-mail addresses, etc. unencrypted, it can quickly fall into the wrong hands. The Security Check checks whether there is any disclosed data in the source code on your website and displays it to you.

Cross-site scripting – also known as XSS – is also an attack variant in which unauthorized persons gain access to sensitive, valuable data. A security hole is exploited to integrate a malicious script into the page. A common example of this is a registration form. Forums are particularly often affected. The user who uses the form is then automatically sent malicious information. The Security Check gives you a warning if a vulnerability is found on your site that makes an XSS attack possible.

Another important point in the security check deals with weak, inadequate authentication methods. Here, the attacker can succeed in intercepting sent login information and use it for himself. Once an attacker gets hold of the login name and password, he has full access to your databases. SSL certificates and other common authentication methods are therefore an absolute necessity. The Website Security Check checks for the presence of these methods and alerts you to insecure HTTPS forms.

Google Safe Browsing


Safe Browsing is a service of the Google search engine that detects harmful websites. If a danger is detected and identified, both the website operator itself and the users are notified. Since in many cases these are actually reputable sites that have fallen victim to an attack by hackers, it is also Google’s concern to eliminate the problems as quickly as possible.

Google Safe Browsing distinguishes between two different security concerns in its analysis:


Phishing pages are used to trick users into voluntarily entering passwords or account information. The classic example of a phishing attempt are pages that copy the structure and design of a bank’s official e-banking platform.

Malware, on the other hand, spies on data by installing malicious software on the user’s computer.

PhishTank


As the name suggests, the PhishTank service is primarily concerned with detecting phishing sites and protecting against them. PhishTank was founded by David Ulevitch, who is also behind the company OpenDNS. PhishTank’s valuable work is based on a community system. Users can report suspicious websites to the platform themselves. After a check, the malicious site is added to a list. Browsers such as Mozilla Firefox and numerous anti-virus programs access this list from PhishTank in order to make their services even more secure.

If this is not the case and you believe your website was incorrectly classified as malicious by PhishTank, you can contact the service and have the matter investigated. As a rule, however, such incorrect decisions are rare. If your site appears in PhishTank’s blacklist, you have probably been the target of an attack. The security check is the first step to making your website secure again.

McAfee Siteadvisor


The third and last external source used for the first part of the security check is the McAfee Siteadvisor. This is an extension of the McAfee anti-virus program that can detect and warn about threats directly in the browser.

The McAfee Siteadvisor knows four classifications:


stands for tested, secure sites.

stands for pages where caution is advised because they could contain harmful content.

stands for sites with serious security problems containing malware and the like.

stands for pages that have not yet been tested.

The risk assessment of the Security Check comprises more than 100 check points. This involves the examination of those points in the source code of a page that are considered typical security vulnerabilities. The more such vulnerabilities a site has, the more susceptible it is to attacks from third parties. In order to keep up to date with the latest security developments, the Security Check uses the OWASP Top 10, an annual list of the most frequently occurring vulnerabilities on the Internet.

The Security Check breaks down the results into the following three categories:

  • High-risk security issues,
  • medium-risk security issues, and
  • Security problems with low risk.

In the absolute ideal case, not a single security risk is found and the score in all three categories is 0. For most websites, however, at least a few vulnerabilities in the low range are found that should be fixed.
