WebRank

What is WebRank?

WebRank is a method patented by Yahoo in 2004 to measure the relevance and quality of an Internet presence. Each website receives a rating from 1 to 10. The higher the number, the more valuable the website is. The procedure is thus very similar to Google’s even older PageRank, which classified similarly. The advantages of WebRank are obvious: search engines can rank their results more easily. Users receive an assessment of how good or bad a website is.

Reading WebRank: Yahoo Companion Toolbar is necessary

Users who want to read out the rank must install the Yahoo Companion Toolbar

. This exists as an extension for all common browsers. A corresponding button can be found in the toolbar. If it is pressed, the browser sends the last URL addresses anonymously to Yahoo. Here they are evaluated and returned. The following things are to be considered:

  • WebRanking can be deactivated at any time via the “Settings” area of the toolbar.
  • There are no automatic scans. The URLs are really only read out when the user requests it.
  • Users who request a ranking always receive the current value. It is always re-measured.
  • Anonymous tracking takes place if the button is not disabled to evaluate user behavior.

Further developments of the WebRank

Originally, the WebRanks came from a time when Yahoo was still a serious competitor of Google in the field of search engines. As we all know, this has changed permanently. Subsequently, the tool has also grown and new factors have been added, for example:

  • Google ranking
  • Alexa Ranking
  • Backlink evaluations
  • Evaluations
  • Compete Ranking
  • Statistics of all kinds in graphical form

The term is also no longer protected. Other developers have therefore launched products for search engine optimization (SEO) that have identical names.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs) about WebRanks

What is decisive for a good rating?

Yahoo has never made this public. In addition, the algorithm responsible is constantly changing. But the following factors have proven to be important for the ranking:

  • strong backlinks
  • users stay on the page for a long time
  • high-quality content

What are the benefits of WebRanks for SEO measures?

The ranking is easy to understand. The small number range allows a quick assessment. However, a disadvantage goes hand in hand with this: it is difficult and time-consuming to increase one’s own ratings. Only in the long term can you tell whether optimisation measures are effective. This is one of the reasons why Google, for example, significantly revised the PageRank at some point.
