>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>What is the Yahoo Directory?
The Yahoo! Directory, also called Yahoo Directory, was a very large paid web directory. For a short time it was the largest web directory in the world. It was founded in 1994 in Sunnyvale, California by David Filo and Jerry Yan. In the Yahoo! Directory countless websites were arranged in different categories. Initially, the directory was called “Jerry and Davids’s Guide to the World Wide Web”. In 2014, the directory was discontinued.
According to the company, Yahoo stands for “Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle.”
Why was the web directory so successful?
- In 1994, only a few web sites existed on the WWW. Therefore, the need for web directories was not yet recognized by many.
- Crawler technology to capture website content was only in its infancy. Running a search engine involved a lot of manual work, which included, for example, manually checking the entries. This effort may have deterred potential competitors.
What’s thrown out of the directory?
The Yahoo! Directory still exists, but is now out of date and therefore less relevant.
